The idea of creating a festival in the area of Ston was inspired by the story of salt and the Dubrovnik Republic, which based its progress, among other things, on the production and trade of this important food item. The Ston saltworks, unchanged since the 14th century, was a strategic economic point of the Dubrovnik Republic, while today it is an important economic entity and a unique cultural monument and tourist attraction.
The salt harvest, carried out in the Ston Saltworks in a historical manner every year, is also a special tourist attraction and captures the attention of visitors.
The Salt Festival in Ston is a multimedia event with a rich program: from gastronomic and oenological events, to presentations of traditional crafts and products, workshops for children on the topic of salt, and concerts of folklore and popular music.
The salt festival promotes existing capacities and comparative advantages of this area and traditional products, without endangering the environment, and draws attention to the richness of heritage, both economic and cultural, emphasizing partnership among stakeholders of local administration, tourism stakeholders, small producers, local population, and visitors.
